Dream in the Distance

I wake up at night
Again feeling that cold horror
Of being all alone
In the darkness of night
In the deafening silence
I scream in my head
With a voice you can't hear
My hand trembling with fear
I reach to where you should have been
As I encounter only air
My heart sinks as I realize the thought
"It has finally reached me
The nightmare in the distance"

And then tears fill my eyes
When you turn to your other side
And the darkness creeps away
So much I yearn for your touch
But can't bare to wake you
That I wait till the silence is gone
Awake in my nightmare
Quietly reaching towards your light
Crawling through the tears
Remembering that long-gone time
When you were just another
Dream in the distance
